In the lower reaches of the Wujiang River in southeastern Chongqing, there lies a geological secret favored by nature — Wulong Tiansheng Three Bridges. As a core part of the “South China Karst” UNESCO World Heritage Site, it integrates wonder, danger, beauty and seclusion, and is famous for being the world’s largest beaded natural bridge group. It is also the core reason why countless tourists travel to Wulong. Stepping into this place is like stepping into a geological picture scroll of hundreds of millions of years, where you can encounter the uncanny craftsmanship of nature at every step, and every landscape hides the unique charm of karst landforms.

Tiansheng Three Bridges is not a single bridge, but consists of three natural stone arch bridges connected longitudinally: Tianlong (Sky Dragon) Bridge, Qinglong (Green Dragon) Bridge and Heilong (Black Dragon) Bridge. These three bridges span the Yangshuihe Valley, and together with Qinglong Sinkhole and Shenying Sinkhole, they form the rare world geological spectacle of “three bridges flanking two sinkholes”, which is also a unique geological structure combination in the world. According to geological experts, this spectacle was formed about 12 million years ago, and after natural processes such as water erosion and gravity collapse, it has formed its grand appearance today, which can be called the pinnacle of karst landforms.
To visit Tiansheng Three Bridges, the classic tour route is the first choice, which takes about 3 hours, easy and not tiring, suitable for tourists of all ages. After purchasing tickets at the scenic spot’s visitor center, you need to take the scenic shuttle bus to the entrance. During the ten-minute drive, you can enjoy the mountain scenery along the way and feel the ecological beauty of Wulong in advance. Upon arriving at the entrance, you can choose to take the 360° rotating observation elevator directly to the bottom of the pit, saving the fatigue of hiking down the mountain, and at the same time overlook the panoramic view of the sinkhole, feeling the shock of the “abyss”; if you are physically fit, you can also choose to walk down the mountain, enjoying the scattered vegetation and rock wall landscapes along the way, and immersing yourself in the natural atmosphere.
Entering the bottom of the pit, the first thing you encounter is Tianlong Bridge. As the most majestic of the three bridges, it is 235 meters high and 147 meters wide, with an arch that looks like the huge mouth of a beast, imposing momentum. The left arch of Tianlong Bridge is called “Ecstasy Cave”, which is 120 meters higher than the right one. Light shines through the cave entrance, forming a light and shadow effect of interweaving light and dark. Walking in it, you feel as if you are in a secret place. Below Tianlong Bridge is the famous Tianfu Official Post, a quadrangle-style building with blue tiles and gray walls, which is a replica of the official post of the Tang Dynasty. It is an important exterior shooting location in the movie “Curse of the Golden Flower”. Standing on the post road, you seem to be able to travel back to ancient times and feel the hurry and solemnity of the ancient postmen delivering official documents.

Moving forward, you come to Qinglong Bridge. With a height of 281 meters, it is the tallest natural karst bridge in the world. Its lines are smooth, just like a green dragon soaring into the sky, hence the name. Qinglong Bridge is particularly beautiful after rain: waterfalls pour down, mist fills the air, and a gorgeous rainbow will form under the sunlight, which sets off with the bridge and canyon, forming a beautiful landscape painting. Below Qinglong Bridge is Shenying Sinkhole, with steep inner walls and a high vegetation coverage rate. Standing at the bottom of the sinkhole and looking up, the sky is cut into a “strip of sky” by the bridge, and the howling of the wind passing through the bridge cave is like the low moaning of ancient beasts, making people can’t help but feel awe.
Finally, you reach Heilong Bridge, which is located in the lower reaches of the Yangshuihe Valley and is named for its deep and dark arch and ink-black rocks. The arch height of Heilong Bridge is 11 meters, the highest among the three bridges. There are many natural springs distributed in the arch, with gurgling water all year round, forming landscapes such as “Mist Spring” and “Pearl Spring”. The mist shrouds, adding a bit of mysterious atmosphere. Walking under Heilong Bridge, you can feel the coolness at the bottom of the pit, away from the noise of the outside world, with only the sound of running water and birdsong accompanying you, which is very pleasant.
In addition to the core landscapes of the three bridges and two sinkholes, there are also characteristic scenic spots such as the glass viewing platform and Longquan Cave in the scenic area. The glass viewing platform extends suspended to the center of the sinkhole, with a 300-meter abyss under your feet, which is not suitable for people with acrophobia, but it can take in the panoramic view of the three bridges, with a very high photo rate. During the tour, you can also taste Wulong’s characteristic delicacies: Wanwan Lamb (spicy and not fishy), Yangjiao Dried Tofu (chewy taste), Braised Bacon with Fern Cake (crispy and delicious with rice), all of which are unforgettable local flavors.
Regarding practical information, tourists need to know in advance: the scenic area is open from 8:30 to 17:00 (admission stops at 16:00), the ticket price is 125 yuan per person (including the shuttle bus), and students and the elderly can enjoy a 50% discount; for transportation, you can take the high-speed rail (from Chongqing North Station to Wulong Station, 40-90 minutes), drive by yourself (2.5 hours from the main urban area) or take a coach (direct from Sigongli Hub Station); it is recommended to wear non-slip sports shoes and long pants for dressing, the temperature at the bottom of the pit is relatively low, so you can prepare a thin coat; the signal in the scenic area is weak, so it is recommended to download an offline map in advance and carry a power bank and drinking water.
Wulong Tiansheng Three Bridges is a masterpiece of nature’s craftsmanship for hundreds of millions of years, and also a fairy-tale secret place in movies.
