Twin Towers Standing Tall, Weaving a New Financial Skyline in Chengdu

At No. 966 North Section of Tianfu Avenue, Chengdu High-tech Zone, two 220-meter-high skyscrapers stand side by side like a pair of giants advancing together. These are the Chengdu Financial City Twin Towers, also known as Tianfu Twin Towers or Jiaozi Twin Towers. As a core part of the Tianfu International Financial Center, they are a distinct symbol of Chengdu, a millennium-old commercial city, transforming into a modern international metropolis. As a landmark building in Chengdu’s Financial Headquarters Business District, the Twin Towers not only reshape the city’s skyline but also carry the city’s financial dreams and cultural heritage, becoming an urban benchmark that connects history and the future, and integrates function and aesthetics.

Twin Towers Standing Tall, Weaving a New Financial Skyline in Chengdu

The birth of the Twin Towers is a perfect integration of era needs and architectural wisdom. The project officially started construction in March 2011, was completed in March 2020, and put into operation in October of the same year. After nearly a decade of polishing, it has finally become a city classic. Its construction was originally driven by the adjustment of functional formats in the Financial City Park and the demand for improving land use efficiency. As an expansion and renovation project, it increased the regional plot ratio from 1.0 to 1.6 while minimizing the impact on existing buildings, balancing economic benefits and improving the regional functional layout. This building complex with a total construction area of about 168,000 square meters consists of two tower buildings of the same height. The North Tower is a high-end apartment with supporting commerce, the South Tower is a Grade A office building, and the basement is equipped with commercial service facilities, underground garages and equipment rooms, realizing an integrated one-stop experience of office, residence and leisure.

In terms of architectural design, the Twin Towers perfectly combine modern technology with oriental aesthetics, showing the unique charm of “harmony without uniformity”. The design inherits the double-skin strategy of the first phase of the Tianfu International Financial Center. The outer layer adopts a fully metal hollow outer mesh with a distinctively Chinese “ice flower shape”, composed of 5 types of ice pattern carved aluminum alloy standard panels. Through staggered arrangement, the texture is homogenized, which not only ensures the simplicity and elegance of the facade but also plays a role in sunshade and energy conservation. The inner layer adopts a full LOW-E hollow glass curtain wall as the climate boundary of the building. It optimizes the indoor vision through reasonable division and makes full use of natural ventilation with openable outer windows, which is consistent with Chengdu’s mild climate characteristics. It is worth mentioning that the catwalk system between the double skins not only facilitates the cleaning and maintenance of the glass facade but also reduces the hidden danger of high-altitude parabolic objects, demonstrating the humanized consideration of the design.

In terms of form composition, the Twin Towers are based on geometric principles, with their shapes adjusted by ellipsoidal and cylindrical cutting. The two buildings are symmetrically placed along the east-west main axis of the region, inheriting the centripetal characteristics of the Park’s buildings and coexisting harmoniously with the surrounding buildings. In response to the functional differences between the South Tower (office building with 4.125-meter floor height) and the North Tower (apartment with 3.3-meter floor height), the design uses 16.5 meters as a unified height unit, realizing the visual unification of the vertical sections of the two buildings, ensuring the integrity of the overall image and meeting the functional needs of the internal space. This design that balances aesthetics and practicality has won the Twin Towers many honors, including the First Prize of Sichuan Provincial Excellent Engineering Survey and Design Achievements in 2020 and the First Prize of China Architecture Excellent Survey and Design Award for Excellent (Public) Architectural Design in 2020, making it a model of modern Chinese architectural design.

As the core carrier of the Western Financial Center, the Twin Towers’ financial agglomeration effect is becoming increasingly prominent. The South Tower, as the first fund building in Southwest China – Jiaozi Fund Building, has attracted many Fortune 500 enterprises, well-known domestic and foreign financial institutions, industrial funds and other high-quality enterprises to settle in, becoming an important hub for financial capital circulation. The high-end apartments in the North Tower provide a convenient and comfortable living environment for financial elites, and the supporting facilities such as fitness centers and constant-temperature swimming pools around further improve the business and living scenarios. Relying on the radiation drive of the Twin Towers, a financial business district centered on Jiaozi Avenue has formed around it, surrounded by commercial complexes such as Yintai IN99 and China Merchants Grand Cube. The ecological landscape of Jiaozi Park and the financial and business atmosphere complement each other, constructing a composite development pattern of “finance + ecology + commerce”.

In addition to its financial functions, the Twin Towers have also become a cultural landmark and a popular check-in spot in Chengdu, and the annual light show has amazed the whole city. Its external walls are equipped with customized LED metal light strip screens with a total length of 162,000 meters, adopting curved LED screen technology to achieve high synchronization of video content on the two towers. On important festivals such as New Year and Lantern Festival, the Twin Towers will stage a themed light show. During the 2026 Lantern Festival, with themes such as “Splendid Tianfu · Shining Vientiane” and “Riding the Horse to a New Journey, Forging Ahead into the Future”, it integrated intangible cultural heritage brocade, Year of the Horse elements and technological light and shadow, presenting an audio-visual feast for citizens. Jiaozi Ring Pedestrian Bridge and Jiaozi Park have become the best spots to appreciate the light show, where the lake reflection and bright lights complement each other, making the Twin Towers an important engine of Chengdu’s night Economy.

From the financial genes of the millennium-old Jiaozi to the towering Twin Towers today, Chengdu’s financial dreams continue to develop on this land. The Twin Towers are not only a building complex but also a symbol of Chengdu’s spirit of openness, inclusiveness, forging ahead and forging ahead. They carry the development mission of the Western Financial Center, witness the rise and take-off of Chengdu, and continue to write Chengdu’s financial legend and urban glory at the intersection of history and the future.
