At No. 168 Mengzhuiwan Street, Chenghua District, Chengdu, a 339-meter-high giant building pierces the sky. It is the Tianfu Panda Tower, also known as Jinxiu Tianfu Tower, which is not only the tallest tower in Western China but also an iconic landmark engraved with the temperament of Chengdu. The birth of Tianfu Panda Tower carries the marks and visions of urban development. In 2004, with the last bolt tightened, the main project of this 339-meter-high tower, which ranks the seventh in the world and the fourth in China, was completed. In 2014, after a public naming vote, the name “Jinxiu Tianfu Tower” was officially determined, and it was later widely known as Tianfu Panda Tower. Its architectural design is unique and ingenious, designed by Li Zhili and other designers from the Design Institute of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television. Breaking through the common cylindrical shape, it adopts a four-limb structure with eight sides attached with four legs. The inclined braces around the tower base rise from the ground, and the four legs of the tower gradually narrow upward along the diagonal, finally opening their four arms to the blue sky. With a fully transparent glass roof, it not only ensures the transparency and brightness of the building’s interior but also makes the overall shape crystal clear, like a pearl inlaid in the sky above Chengdu.
As a multi-functional composite tower, each floor of Tianfu Panda Tower hides different surprises. The tower is composed of five parts: the tower base, the lower tower, the tower body, the upper tower and the antenna mast. The first-floor platform can hold meetings and cultural performances, the lower tower is a leisure and catering area, and the upper tower is the core sightseeing and entertainment area. Among them, the 208-meter indoor observation layer adopts a unique circular design with an area of 800 square meters. There are observation cameras in four directions outside the hollow glass. Tourists can control the cameras through tablets to overlook the whole city in 360 degrees in real time. The 218-meter outdoor observation layer is even more popular. On the 1,000-square-meter platform, there is a hollow glass observation platform at each of the southeast, northwest and southwest corners.
